Resolved Question

In the United Kingdom - which is more popular , Costa Coffee or Starbucks ?

which is your favourate of the two ?

I have a sneaky feeling this question if discovered by the marketing agencies of both Costa and Starbucks, could get somebody to simply report this for abuse as its unfairly drawing silly comparisons based on a 'um i like that one more' consenus.

I honestly don't think either has an edge over the other - case closed.

HOWEVER , some consumers are known as 'brand loyalists' in the Marketing and Branding field of study (guess what I graduated in back in 94 folks :-D )

two stores opposite each other on the street - both in an 'up market' part of your city, and both seat around 150+ people with savoury snacks, pies and what not.

Costa Coffee or Starbucks ? which one would you walk into without a seconds thought ?

Let the Coffee Wars Commence ! :-D

Well if you would like to read todays (saturday) Daily Mail you will find a large article by Starbucks saying how they are loosing out to Costa and Cafe Nero. Starbucks have said that their shops are outdated and they are going to close down a lot of high street shops and rebrand with up to date decor.
So case closed by Starbucks. From the horses mouth.

  • If you ask the ordinary man in the street, I think a significant number of them would say that they do NOT really care where they get their coffee from and it might depend on which store presents itself at the moment when he/she fancies a cup of coffee. So this means that it would depend on store locations and if the foot traffic consists of people in the particular location that fancies coffee.

The pricing does not really matter because people overall thinks that coffee from establishments like Costa and Starbucks are too expensive anyway and you are being ripped off irrespective from which of the recognised high street players you buy from.

Of interest I met a someone who claimed to be a head of sorts for Starbucks in a Pub in Chiswick recently. He said that starbucks biggest competitor at the moment is Mcdonalds ( hard to believe that a non specialist restaurant is considered to be the biggest competitor). By the way he said that he believed that Starbucks has not done enough to capture the tea market as Brits are known more for tea drinking than coffee and he said that their tea really needed improvement.

A friend of mine who was present with me, met this guy a few weeks later, and he said that they have managed to source better tea since our first meeting.

  • Hey,
    Interesting question..
Im torn because Costa does arguably do a better quality coffee as the barista grinds coffee manually on the coffee machine... whereas in Starbucks they just press a button for the coffee..

On the other hand, though, Starbucks has a much wider variety of drinks/frappacinos etc etc

A lot of people like the prestige of starbucks - i think its been around longer than costa and is more internationally wide spread? So that might make them wanna go there... i kinda like costa BECAUSE of the fact that its a bit smaller.. i guess costa is like the new black. hehe
